About Our Storage Compound

The Sun Cities RV Compound,  is a 501 (C)(4) Non-profit and provides RV Storage to Residents - within the boundaries of the age restricted Del Webb communities of Sun City, Sun City West, Sun City Grand, Sun City Festival and Corte Bella.
   
We store the following types of vehicles in the Compound:

  • · Motor homes: Class A, Class B, Class C (with or without car dolly) must have holding tanks, sewer connection and shore power connection.

  • 5th Wheel trailers 

  • Travel trailers

  •  Boat Trailers

  • Campers (on or off the truck)

  • Pickup Shells

  • Utility Trailers

  • Boats

Biographies

John Groothuizen - President

John has served on the Board since 2022, as Secretary from 2022 to 2024 and as President since 2025.   He has been an owner and full-time resident of Sun City West since 2014 and a member of the RV Compound since 2020.   John is a mechanical engineer who spent his entire career in the paper industry, working in various roles in Maintenance, Projects, Technical Support, and Facility Management in Canada, Alabama, Arizona, and Florida.  His hobbies include RVing, off-roading in his RZR, golfing, and tinkering with Solar Panels and Lithium battery conversions.

Gary Phelps - Vice President

​Gary has served on the board since 2025, served as Secretary, 2025-2026, and is currently Vice President.  He has been a member of the RV compound since 2021.  He has lived in the SC Festival community full-time since 2021.  Gary retired from British Petroleum (BP) in Durango, CO, where he served as a dispatcher.  One of his main duties was monitoring natural gas production from over 1500 wells in the San Juan Basin.  Gary has interests in travel, RVing, and motorcycling.

 

Mark Crashell - Secretary

Newly elected Board member as of spring 2026.  Full-time resident of Sun City since 2016, RV owner and compound member since 2020.  Before retirement, Mark’s career was split between sales and operations, mainly in the food and beverage industry, managing multi-site, multi-state, million-square-foot distribution centers.  In addition to serving on the Compound Board, he is a member of the Sun City Long Range Planning Committee, and Caravan Director of the Sun City RV Club, as well as a member of two golf leagues in Sun City.  Passionate, but continually disappointed, in his hometown Buffalo Bills and Sabres.

Paul Sperry - Treasurer

​After graduating from Illinois State University, Paul played professional baseball in the San Francisco Giants organization.  Then he was part-owner in a Real Estate Company in Decatur, Illinois, before getting into the auto business.  He spent the last 18 years of his career as a dealer and partner in Marcus Allen’s Broadway Ford in Kansas City, MO.  After retiring in 2008, he spent time doing Angel Investing in startup companies while living here in Sun City Grand since 2013.  He has an RV in the Compound and feels his managerial, accounting, and inventory management experience would allow him to be a valuable member of the Sun City RV Compound Board.

 

Paul Turpin - Director

Paul has served on the board since 2022.  He has been a homeowner in The Grand (Sun City Grand) since 2000 and a member of the RV Compound since 2000.  Paul served in the military from 1964 to 1967.  His career started as a tool and die maker in Cincinnati, then changed to law enforcement.  He moved to Phoenix in 1972 and joined the Phoenix Police Department for a 27-year career.  After retiring, he spends time RVing across the country, volunteering for 4H programs, farming, and working at county fairgrounds.

Bob McKay – Director

Born in Nebraska and graduated from Lincoln High School.  Joined the Navy at age 17 and attended Boot Camp in San Diego, CA.  After returning from his first deployment overseas, he met his future wife at a USO dance in San Diego.  After 10 years of Naval Service, Bob left for a career in law enforcement, beginning with LAPD for two years, then transferring to the Anaheim Police Dept for the remaining 25.  After retirement, he and his wife moved to Durango Co, building their own home on 10 acres east of town.  Bob and his wife moved to Sun City in 2010.   He has been a board member since 2021.

Rob Renaud – Director

Rob was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona.  Married with 4 children.  He was the owner of a Deli in Paradise Mall and a Taco Bell Franchisee.  Also involved in the motorcycle and Jet Ski industry.  We have lived in Sun City for almost 9 years and have been members of the Sun City RV Club for 8.  We have made wonderful memories and good friends with this club.  We love to travel in our RV, towing our Smart Car, and plan to do it until it is time to hang up the keys.  It is an honor to serve on the Compound Board of Directors and represent my fellow RVers.

Lyle Cahill - Director

​Lyle has been serving on the SCRV board since 2025. Before relocating to Arizona, Lyle resided near Denver, Colorado, relocated to The Grand from 2000 to 2019, and became a resident of Sun City West in 2019.  Lyle became a member of the SCRV compound in 2014. Lyle is a U.S. Navy veteran; he served in the Pacific 7th Fleet during the Vietnam conflict.  Lyle’s career expertise spans Information Technology and finance.  He has worked for large banks and manufacturing corporations, bringing valuable skills and experience to his professional roles.  During the summer, Lyle travels in a motorhome throughout the Western United States.  He enjoys playing golf and is enthusiastic about the RV lifestyle, embracing travel and outdoor recreation.

Bob Waite - Director

​Bob is a retired building inspector for a city in Washington state. He dealt with issues related to the life and safety of existing and new buildings and properties daily.  He worked to instill a positive attitude to encourage others toward successful outcomes.

Mike Spencer - Director

​With over 43 years in low-voltage communications sales and sales management, I have built a career delivering complex systems and solutions across major commercial and healthcare projects.  My portfolio includes high-profile installations for organizations such as Kaiser Permanente in Southern California, Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Henry Mayo, and many commercial properties across Los Angeles and the Phoenix metro.  I have held key leadership roles, including Regional Manager for Notifier Fire, Dukane Sound, and the Rauland-Borg Corporation, as well as Market Manager for Norstan Communications in Phoenix, where I drove growth, developed strategic partnerships, and led high-performing sales teams.  I concluded my career with Bay Alarm, focusing on video surveillance, access control, and intrusion solutions, bringing decades of industry expertise, client-focused service, and a strong track record of successful project delivery before retiring in Sun City, Arizona.

Tony Wagner - General Manager

​He began his career in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and attended Military Intelligence School training at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.  After that, he worked as an Intelligence Analyst for the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office.  He then became a Pennsylvania State Trooper, serving in various roles for over 25 years.  In the last 10 years before his retirement in 2017, he was a helicopter pilot and managed the department’s aviation budget as well as its fleet, which included seven helicopters and six airplanes.  After retiring, he worked in armed executive protection until he became the General Manager at the Sun Cities RV Compound in January 2022.  He holds Commercial Rotorcraft and UAV certificates and has been an RV owner/camper since 2001.
